What is an MCP server?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard from Anthropic that lets AI agents like Claude connect to external tools, APIs, and data sources. An MCP server exposes capabilities — like searching the web, reading your calendar, or querying a database — that an AI can call during a conversation. SkillsIndex tracks 4,133+ MCP servers across all categories.

What is the difference between an MCP server and a Claude Skill?

MCP servers run as local or cloud processes that Claude connects to via the MCP protocol — they're infrastructure-level. Claude Skills (also called prompt skills or .claudeskills files) are lightweight text files that teach Claude how to use a specific tool or follow a workflow, without requiring a running server. MCP servers are more powerful; Claude Skills are more portable.

How are tools scored on SkillsIndex?

Every tool is scored 0–100 across four dimensions: Security (30% — code audit, permissions, no dangerous patterns), Utility (30% — how broadly useful, adoption signals), Maintenance (25% — recent commits, issue response rate, not abandoned), and Uniqueness (15% — does it solve something others don't). These combine into the overall score shown on each listing.

How do I get my tool listed on SkillsIndex?

Use the Submit a Tool form at skillsindex.dev/submit/. We review all submissions within 48 hours. Once accepted, your tool is scored and appears in search results and category pages. Listings are always free — we do not charge for inclusion.

Is SkillsIndex free to use?

Yes. Browsing, searching, and comparing tools on SkillsIndex is completely free, forever. We plan to offer premium features (API access, bulk data exports, early stale alerts) in the future, but the core directory will always be free.
