Issue #6 — the final issue of our first six-week season. We have covered databases, browsers, security, cloud platforms, VS Code, and GPT Actions. This week: our opinionated picks. One tool per category. The best of 11,394.

📊 Six Weeks in Review

  • 11,394 tools in the index across 5 ecosystems
  • 6 issues published · 6 SEO deep-dives · 12 weeks of content delivered
  • 52.8% of scored tools have a security score ≤ 2 — the most important number we have published
  • 100/100 — the score shared by three tools: GitHub MCP Server, Chrome DevTools MCP, and the SkillsIndex MCP itself

🏆 The Editor's Picks: 10 Best Tools in April 2026

🗄️ Best Database Tool: MCP Toolbox for Databases (Google)

Score: 94/100 · 13,133 stars · Security 5/5

MCP Toolbox for Databases supports more database backends than anything else in our index, maintained by Google's engineering team with active weekly development. If you are starting from scratch and need database access for your agent, this is the answer.

🌐 Best Browser Tool: Chrome DevTools MCP

Score: 100/100 · 26,401 stars · Security 5/5

Chrome DevTools MCP is the only browser tool in our index to earn a perfect score. 26k stars is remarkable for a tool that requires a running Chrome instance — it reflects how widely web-interacting agents are being built.

🔒 Best Security Tool: Netdata MCP

Score: 97/100 · 77,835 stars · Security 5/5

Netdata is the most-starred monitoring tool in our entire index. It gives your agent access to real-time infrastructure metrics — CPU, memory, network, disk — via a clean MCP interface. If your agents manage any infrastructure, this is the observability layer.

☁️ Best Cloud Tool: GitHub MCP Server

Score: 100/100 · 27,146 stars · Security 5/5

GitHub's official MCP server is the category winner by a wide margin. Perfect score, highest stars in its category, weekly maintenance, and a utility scope that covers every GitHub operation an agent could need.

🤖 Best Agent Framework: FastMCP

Score: 94/100 · 23,054 stars · Security 5/5

FastMCP is for builders, not users. If you are creating MCP servers rather than just installing them, FastMCP is the fastest path from idea to deployed server. 23k stars in a niche framework category is a strong signal.

🧠 Best Memory Tool: cognee

Score: 94/100 · 12,468 stars · Security 5/5

cognee gives agents persistent memory via a knowledge graph. The only tool in our index that makes a research assistant's findings usable across sessions without re-crawling. High score, active development, and the cleanest API in the memory category.

🔍 Best Web Research Tool: Firecrawl MCP

Score: 91/100 · 5,560 stars · Security 5/5

Firecrawl MCP is the best web access tool for agents that need to read and extract content from the web. Token-efficient output, JavaScript rendering support, and an official server maintained by the Firecrawl team.

⚙️ Best Task Orchestration: Claude Task Master

Score: 94/100 · 25,561 stars · Security 5/5

Claude Task Master adds structured task management to Claude — create tasks, assign subtasks, track dependencies, mark completions. For complex multi-step agent workflows, this is the missing piece. 25k stars in less than a year.

💻 Best VS Code Extension: Claude Code for VS Code

Score: 62/100 · Official · Anthropic-maintained

Our pick over GitHub Copilot for one specific reason: Claude Code for VS Code leverages Claude's 200k token context window, which means it can reason over an entire large codebase before responding. For complex refactoring or multi-file operations, this context advantage is material.

🌐 Best AI Index Tool: SkillsIndex MCP

Score: 100/100 · Official

We built the SkillsIndex MCP so AI agents can discover and evaluate tools without a human intermediary. Search 11,394 tools, check security scores, get recommendations — directly from your agent. npx skillsindex-mcp.

📈 What Six Weeks Taught Us

Three observations from building this index and writing these newsletters:

  1. Security is the biggest gap in the ecosystem. 52.8% of scored tools scoring ≤ 2/5 is not a minor data point — it means most MCP servers available right now have not been evaluated for the most basic security hygiene. This will improve, but slowly.
  2. The MCP protocol won. We added zero new GPT Actions this quarter. We added hundreds of MCP servers. The protocol that is cross-platform, open, and integrates with every major IDE has compounding advantages.
  3. Official tools from major vendors dominate the top scores. GitHub, Google, AWS, Hashicorp, and Anthropic all publish official MCP servers. They all score well. The ecosystem is maturing in the right direction.

⚙️ Your Complete AI Agent Stack for April 2026

Based on this season's research, here is the stack we recommend for a well-rounded AI agent setup:

  1. GitHub MCP — code + repositories
  2. Firecrawl MCP — web research
  3. MCP Toolbox for Databases — data access
  4. cognee — persistent memory
  5. Claude Task Master — task management

All five score 91+/100 in our index. All five have perfect security scores. All five are actively maintained.
